Milford Sound

Holiday NZ Ad

Milford Sound on the South Island, is one of the most awesome holiday destinations in New Zealand. It lies on the south west coast of the South Island and is below latitude 45 degrees. This means that if you come during the winter, you will need to rug up as driving winds that sweep across the southern ocean blow straight into the sound and heavy rain and snowfalls are common. Do not let this deter you because the scenery here is some of the best you will ever see. The road from Queenstown comes through a fantastic mountain range where much of the Lord of the rings Trilogy was filmed and the alpine scenery is mind blowing. Road tunnels, high mountain ridges, avalanches, rain and snowfalls create an unbelievably beautiful spectacle.

Campervan Hire, Milford Sounds Canoeing, Milford Sounds Cruises, Milford Sounds

When you reach the Milford sound itself you will simply be amazed at the scenic panorama lying before you. Several large charter boats operate tours into the protected waters of the sound. There is also limited accommodation here and you can also fly in direct if you wish. Before you board your cruise you will walk through a magnificent interpretative center which explains in full how the sounds were produced and how they are protected for the future. You will see unique wildlife during your cruise that includes seals and seabirds.

The west coast of the South Island lies on the ring of fire and the fault line is just offshore. Many minor earth tremors will affect the region every day but you are unlikely to feel them. Bushwalkers find this region irresistible and the Milford Sound walk is a three day treck through forests and waterfalls and camping every night in local cabins and tents. Many things to do in Milford Sound and the entire region is a place that is impossible to forget once you have been there.
